NOTICE: Road interrupted due to a landslide in Via Li Schisani, read the instructions for the detour
Itinerary 16 was often closed for long periods over the past couple of decades. Before then it was one of the most popular routes between Sorrento and Sant’Agata and was therefore part of the original Tolomeo project and included in many guides. It was re-opened at the end of 2020.
The itinerary starts from Parsano gate, continuing left along Via degli Aranci. Straight after the cement building housing the Law Courts, go right along Via Parsano, following this wide asphalted road for about 500 metres, past the entrance to the Congress Hall of the Hilton Sorrento Palace, and at the bend going left, go straight ahead to the steps past the convent of Sant’Antonio. Start going up the steps following the Stations of the Cross passing a chapel along the way. As you climb, you will have excellent views of the city centre. The steps come out onto Via Fregonito, which in under 500 metres brings you to the square and church of Santa Maria del Toro. Continue along the road to the right before taking the second road on the left (the first is the one that is interrupted). Go steeply all the way up to the main road and follow it to the left. A few meters before the hairpin bend, go down a few steps taking you back to the original itinerary of Via Li Schisani until you reach the section in common with itinerary 25. Once at the convergence of the two routes, you can either go back down to Sorrento following route 25 or continue up to Sant’Agata by walking up Via Pagliaio di Santolo. Then, after crossing Via Nastro Verde through an underpass, you will arrive in Sant'Agata.
On the right is the turning onto itinerary 15 and high up on your right you will see a marble plaque commemorating the Neapolitan poet Salvatore di Giacomo who used to stay here during the summer. Straight afterwards turn right along Via Termine and shortly afterwards left onto Corso Sant'Agata.
From the port: Proceed uphill along via Luigi De Maio. After 400 metres you will come to a hairpin bend with steps opposite taking you directly to Piazza Tasso. You can also take the shuttle bus to the centre if you prefer. Cross the square and walk down Corso Italia for 300 metres. After Sorrento Cathedral turn left into Via Sersale. 100 metres further on you will be in Piazza Antiche Mura.
From Sorrento station: Go down the steps of Piazza De Curtis to Corso Italia. Turn left along the Corso and walk for around 400 metres, crossing straight over Piazza Tasso and continuing for another 300 metres along the pedestrian precinct of Corso Italia. Once past Sorrento Cathedral turn left into Via Sersale. 100 metres further on you will be in Piazza Antiche Mura.
