An entirely urban circuit of great historical-urban interest, preferring pedestrian or limited traffic areas with a few short stretches along roads open to regular traffic. It touches all the starting points of the extra-urban and rural itineraries at the edge of the historical centre, in correspondence to Sorrento’s 3 ancient gates, only one of which still existing today. During the walk you will pass through the other two gates towards the marinas (hence the name of this itinerary).
Along the way you will be able to see almost all the sections of the city walls that are still standing and pass many of the main points of touristic interest. Being a circuit, you can start this itinerary at any point along the route.
(description from Piazza Tasso, clockwise)
Setting off from Piazza Tasso (1), pass immediately to the left of the statue of Torquato Tasso.
After a very short uphill stretch you will come to a private terrace on the left overlooking Via Caruso. Vico Sant’Aniello winds under various arches, taking you to Via Pietà (2). Turn left and continue until passing under the bell tower of Sorrento Cathedral (3), where you will immediately turn right. Cross Corso Italia and go straight down the alley to the first intersection, where the Sedil Dominova (4) is to be seen on your right. Our itinerary however continues to the left and you will see first the Schizzariello fountain (5) and then straight after it, the Chiesa dell’Addolarata (6). Turning left at the intersection, cross Corso Italia once again, entering Via Sersale where you will find, under an arch, the Chiesa dei Servi di Maria (7). Passing under Porta di Parsano (8), turn right and after the old power plant (9), continue skirting the ancient walls (10) until steps taking you down to Largo Parsano Vecchio. Proceeding slightly uphill you will find the hospital opposite where, on turning right, you will immediately come to Piazza Veniero (11). Turn left into the square and then left again down some wide steps to the small square in front of the Chiesa dell’Annunziata (12). Continue to the left alongside the rear of the hospital and at the first intersection (Porta di San Baccolo, 13) turn right continuing along Via Sopra le Mura (14) until you come to a first viewpoint. Keep on going and you will reach the junction with itinerary 11a where descending you will pass under Porta di Marina Grande (15) and come to the fishing village. (16). If instead you go right, to the side of the fountain, you will continue following itinerary 11 which will bring you to the Belvedere di Prospietto (17). Leave the square going left, passing under a tiny bridge and past the entrance to Hotel Tramontano (18). 50 metres further on, always on your left, you can visit the Chiesa di San Francesco with its cloisters (19) and the Villa Comunale (20). Returning to our itinerary, continue until you reach Piazza Sant’Antonino, turning left at the first junction going down to the port, passing first in front of the Tourist Office and then the final panoramic point. After the bend, cross the road on the pedestrian crossing and go up the steps that will take you to Porta di Marina Piccola (del Dazio, 21). At the top of the steps on the left you will find the Basilica of Sant’Antonino (22). Turning left into the narrow street at the corner of the church, a few metres later you will reach the last point of interest, the Fountain of Via Sant’Antonino (23). Continue and you will arrive back in Piazza Tasso.
From the port: Proceed uphill along via Luigi De Maio. After 400 metres you will come to a hairpin bend with steps opposite taking you directly to Piazza Tasso. You can also take the shuttle bus to the centre if you prefer.
From Sorrento station: Go down the steps of Piazza De Curtis and straight down to Corso Italia. Turn left and after 400 metres you will be in Piazza Tasso.
